The Croft - What school is like now

We were asked to write to the residents of The Croft in Timaru and tell them what school is like nowadays....

Dear Everyone at The Croft
We are Kowhai Class from Winchester Rural School.  There are 22 of us in our classroom.  We are Year 1s and Year 2’s so that means we are 5,6 and 7 years old.
Our teachers are Mrs McCully and Mrs Clarke.

Our day goes like this.
8.50am The bell rings.  We do the roll and drink our milk.

We do our phonics on our little whiteboards
We do story writing next

10.30am We do Read and Feed.  The teacher reads us a book and we eat our morning tea while we are sitting on the mat.
10.40 11.00am it is play time.

After play time we come in and do maths.  We work in groups.
12.00pm We go and eat our lunch with the rest of the school.  Once the teacher has checked our lunchboxes and made sure that we have eaten enough food we can go out to play.

12.45pm We read our shared poem and then we do our reading.  We have 5 reading groups in our class.  We take a book home to read each night.  One group takes a turn sitting around the jellybean table with the teacher.  The teacher sits on the inside and the children sit around the outside of the jellybean shape.
1.55pm We pack our bags up and go outside for a quick 5 minute break.

We do our handwriting by copying our writing off the whiteboard into our handwriting books.

2-2.50pm We do either our Variety Concert practise, or our music, dance or drama or even our PE.  We are doing gymnastics this term.

At our school we have our own pool.  We swim in it in the summer.  It is heated to 29 degrees.  We have a school library with thousands of books inside it.  We are allowed to take home 2 library books each week.

We designed and built this castle shape to go around our sandpit last term.

If we earn 25 stickers on our sticker chart we get a prize out of our teacher’s “treasure box”.
We have a fish tank in our classroom.

We also have a tree with 2 soft toy birds on it.  We take turns taking a bird home to our house for a night.  We need to bring the bird toy back to school the next day for the next person.

We hope that we can come in and visit you one day.
From Mrs McCully and Kowhai Class.
